Wates Beacon Programme

The Beacon Programme is a work experience programme offering Year 12 students the opportunity to explore the wide range of jobs in the construction sector.

The Wates Beacon Programme provides work experience to Year 12 students, helping them explore the range of careers in construction.

Client brief

Wates identified that work experience in schools often falls short when it comes to spotlighting construction and all the different roles available in the sector to 6th form students.

Out of date opinions like ‘it’s muddy boots” or ‘only for boys” still linger for students, their parents and teachers. Beacon was a work experience programme designed to show a group of students that a career in construction can encompass design, accounting, and architecture, as well as getting out on site.

The process

We worked closely with Social Value Manager Danielle Buckley to make sure we captured this new work experience programme through video. We also upskilled the students through vlogging workshops. In fact, we included their user generated content in the final edits.

This combination of upskilling in school and inclusion of youth voice helped to give the video impact and authenticity to give real weight to the positive benefits of the Wates Beacon Programme.

The results

The Wates Beacon Programme video is relatable and current. It’s relevant to a wide audience including school children who might do this programme somewhere else in the country.

Wates were pleased to be able to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to social impact in a visual way.

Rachel Woolliscroft, Wates Construction’s Sustainability Manager, has said of our services:

“Mediorite have been a social enterprise partner working with Wates Group for a number of years. Not only are the products they produce of high quality and inspiring but we know that every pound we invest with them, we are making a huge difference to supporting young people.”

"It really shows Wates in its true form and how we deliver social value!"
