A new way to deliver work experience in the construction sector.

Danielle Buckley, Regional Social Value Manager at Wates Residential comments “ I believe the reason most young people don’t consider our industry is because they don’t see that we are a thriving exciting industry with lots of different roles”.

The Beacon Programme took 39 students from St Boscoe College in Wandsworth through an 11 week programme, participating in 1 five hour session per week. In that time students spent time in various roles at Wates, providing critical experience, including understanding around how you dress and how to behave. “We wanted to really prepare these students for the world of work”

How Mediorite worked with Wates

Mediorite worked with Wates to document the pilot programme and had the idea to use the creative process of the film as part of the work experience. Danielle “We wanted to capture the experience through the students’ eyes. There’s nothing like hearing it from the horse’s mouth and you’re really watching the students change over the 11 weeks”. The Mediorite team came into the school to run a vlogging session which was key to the young people buying into the process and ensured that the same film crew kept coming to film, giving the group continuity as we documented the programme.

“Mediorite was part of the journey, they were patient, they educated and supported us when it came to the editing process so that we kept our vision alive. it wasn’t Wates and St John Boscoe school, it was Wates, St John De Boscoe and Mediorite and that is why the film doesn't feel corporate.”

The success

It’s a high quality professional corporate video but it’s not standard, it’s relatable, current and it’s relevant to a wide audience including school children who might do this programme somewhere else in the country. It really shows Wates in its true form and how we deliver social value!

We secured a second year with the schools because of the video and it’s invaluable in bids and work winning in general and we’ve shown it throughout the company. Going the extra mile and creating a film means we don’t have to tell people about the programme, we show them the programme and that’s been invaluable.

Would you recommend this approach to building participation from students?

Putting the end user at the heart of the story is why we do social value so it’s invaluable. It takes you away from the traditional means where you tell people what you do, you’re showing people you’re going the extra mile. It allows you to demonstrate that put your words and commitments into action
