We love celebrating young talents we’ve supported into the creative biz through our opportunities and training. Niamh Gibbs was a fantastic Junior Producer / Director for Mediorite in 2022-4. She came to us as part of a work experience scheme to support local talent into paid film work. Niamh got her placement while we were filming assets for construction company Wates as they delivered local housing in partnership with Havering council.
Niamh now works in TV for the award-winning Race Against the World, using her accounts skills to help make the money magic happen in a vast and complex production!
This is her story.

Niamh’s career journey:
Race Across the World: Award-winning TV
“I’m working as an Accounts Assistant for the Race Across the World team. This means I’m working in a fast-paced environment to ensure accurate financial administration and record keeping for an award-winning BBC show.
Close collaboration with production
We work closely alongside the production crew in the pre-production stages, production stages, and post-production stages to ensure that the production and location crews have the funds they need to make the race happen for the crew, and contestants. This can be something as simple as topping up, reimbursing personal expenses, to processing international payments.
Work experience: Building networks, confidence, skills and experience
I’m really grateful that Lucy Ferguson MBE took a chance on me and gave me a paid work experience opportunity in collaboration with Havering, as this then led to other jobs with Mediorite, giving me the confidence to network, build my confidence, and put myself out there. Working with Mediorite and Havering taught me how important communication and attention to detail are on set, which has been very beneficial to working on Race Across the World, where we are often competing with time differences and foreign currencies.
It’s quite cool to think that I started out on a paid work experience for my local council, and submitting my own invoice for the first time and having no idea on what to put on it! Now I’m processing and error-checking lots of high-value invoices before processing and paying them. The difference between now and then is night and day really!

Working alongside other creative people who want to make ambitious things happen is a special sort of magic, especially when everyone pulls together to overcome hurdles or solve a problem – just seeing the end result is so rewarding.”
Media careers help for Young Creatives
Young people: Mediorite offer free film and TV production training and media career guides for young people to get into TV and film jobs.
Schools and colleges: We also offer a range of film training courses for schools and colleges, and free media teaching resources including support with getting media work placements for students and learners.
