BFI Film Academy Training Courses

The National Film and Television School (NFTS) today announced the launch of two brand new specialist courses in Costume Design and Hair and Makeup, marking a significant expansion of the School’s world leading training for behind-the-scenes screen craft.

The courses are the first entirely new programmes to be housed in the recently announced The Cubby Broccoli Building, currently under development at the School’s Beaconsfield campus and slated to open its doors in January 2027. The building forms the centrepiece of the School’s expansion and will provide accessible new facilities, designed to support the next generation of creative talent working across film, television and games. In our bespoke TV studios, students use cutting‑edge technology and work alongside our expert team to produce a news report, trailer, or film pitch idea—while building confidence and essential future skills like Creativity, Communication, and Collaboration

A range of time slots will be available, and we may be able to offer flexibility—so if a time doesn’t quite suit, please get in touch.

If you’re unable to visit us in person, we also offer a teacher‑led, in‑classroom experience. Students use Adobe Express to create a news report or digital poster, developing storytelling, creative, and digital skills.

Every year BAFTA runs a competition to find aspiring young presenters to host our events and content for children and young people. Two lucky winners, one aged 10-14 and one aged 15-18, then have the chance to front content for the Young BAFTA YouTube Channel and represent BAFTA at special events around the country.

BFI FUNDING  – Producers can apply for between £5,000 and £25,000, for stand alone fiction short films in live action, animation or immersive/virtual reality, that have directors based in England. If your director is based in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales, or your project is a documentary, use our funding finder page to find relevant opportunities.

Projects can be up to 15 minutes in length and teams must be made up of at least two people across the three creative roles of writer, producer, and director (director-producers are not eligible to apply).

The fund is intended to stimulate new ideas and stories, so it doesn’t support adaptations of existing material, apart from of the writer’s own previous work.

We can only accept applications for projects that are scheduled to start production between 1 October 2025 and 30 June 2026.

This is a practical course in which you will learn about all forms of sports production, including creating your own stories and collaborating with students in other specialisms. You will be equipped with the skills required to produce state-of-the-art sports and live events coverage, highlights content and more so you graduate confident in the skills needed to fill these in-demand roles.

You will have access to the NFTS’ high quality production facilities including our 4K television studio, complete a four-week work experience placement at IMG Studios and visit other major sports production houses.

The NFTS awards more scholarships and bursaries to British students, relative to the size of our student body, than almost any other educational institution in the UK. Scholarships available include an IMG scholarship for applicants from under-represented groups, and a limited number of BBC scholarships.
