SHIFT training FAQs

Find answers to some of your most frequently asked training questions below. But if you still have questions please email Reuben, our Head of Training at reuben@mediorite.co.uk.

Is SHIFT really a FREE video production training course or do you have to pay?

It’s FREE. No hidden costs. No strings attached.

As a SHIFT student you do not have to pay for the course, although you will need to cover your own food and travel expenses when attending in-person sessions.

This video production course is free because Mediorite is a social enterprise with the goal to help under-represented young people get into TV and film production careers. There is no cost to you, the student.

What type of digital film and video production training is offered on the course?

You’ll get masterclasses and training sessions with creative professionals such as camera operators, directors of photography, producer directors and editors.

You’ll also get one to one mentoring to help you get work ready and improve your confidence.

PLUS you’ll get the opportunity to develop hands-on filmmaking skills by creating a personal film with the help of Mediorite staff.

What work opportunities do you get from the SHIFT training course?

We have found young people work placements in large video production companies that specialise in documentaries and factual films.

Some have been given roles as office runners, runners in commercial settings and as editors in post-production.

Some of our SHIFT course graduates have had the opportunity to work in film and photography at London Fashion Week and Getty Images, and even work at Netflix.

What are some of the SHIFT training course graduates doing now?

One of the participants in our SHIFT course was offered a job with one of his placements as an office runner, then he got a short contract as a casting assistant. Two of our alumni are currently working at Mediorite, one as a junior editor and one as an assistant youth worker. Some of our alumni are regular freelancers for us now as camera assistants, producers and editors. Our SHIFT course graduate Eleanor is progressing in her film production career and you can see from her IMDB profile that she has been involved in popular Netflix shows like Constellation and Bad Dinosaurs.

Do I need a film background or experience in the industry to be considered for the training courses?

You don’t need a film background to be considered, just a passion for film and media!

When you email Reuben our Head of Training to apply, it will help your course application if you can show why you have an active and practical interest in getting into a film production career.

If I live in London but not in the borough of Hackney or Tower Hamlets, can I still apply?

Yes, we can be flexible on where you live in London. You just need to be able to attend in-person sessions in North London (Dalston).

If I am not aged 18-25 can I still apply for the SHIFT production training course?

Unfortunately, the training course is currently only for 18-25 year olds.
